Tiny Habits Approach

BJ Fogg says that if you want to change a behaviour, make it tiny.  Make sure it fits in with what you do naturally and don't worry about it becoming more than this - momentum will naturally grow and you will naturally do more.

We totally subscribe to this approach to overcoming your fear of flying. What does this mean in actual reality?

Do this:

Starting today, at a time that you can repeat every day, do one thing towards overcoming your fear of flying that takes 5 mins...or even 2 mins....or even 1 minute.  For example, everyday, at the same time, take three deep breaths.  In through the nose, hold for a few seconds and slowly out through the mouth. Repeat. Do this everyday.

Do this for 14 days and that is it.  If you feel you can do more, great. If not, just do this.  The important things to think about:

  • Do it in the morning when will power is highest
  • Do it at same time
  • Do it tiny - do not think 'I will catch up at the weekend and do it big time!'
  • Tiny habits, repeated until you don't need to 'make' yourself do it.

This is the basis of our 30-day program actually. This requires 10 minutes or so a day but the principles are the same.  Little and often. Everyday is better than binge all in one go.
