Overcoming the Fear of Flying: A Change Management Perspective

Fear of flying is a common issue that many face, often stemming from anxiety about losing control or the unknown. Interestingly, we can apply the Beckhard and Harris Resistance to Change Model to understand and address this fear.  Maybe?

The Beckhard and Harris Model

This model suggests that resistance to change can be influenced by several factors:

1. **Dissatisfaction with the Current State**: For someone afraid of flying, this might manifest as discomfort with travel limitations.  It can be as simple as 'What is the pain that I receive by not being able to fly?  What is the impact?'

2. **Vision of the Desired State**: Imagine enjoying travel, exploring new places without anxiety. 'What do I stand to gain when I fly?'

3. **First Steps to Change**: Gradual exposure, such as visiting an airport, can help build comfort. 'What are my first tiny steps along the way that I can something every day?'

By addressing these components, individuals can systematically reduce their fear and embrace flying.   By understanding and applying this model, we can turn the fear of flying into an opportunity for personal growth and adventure? Never say never!
